What is social media screening, exactly?
By Loomis · Updated
Social media screening is the practice of reviewing a person's public social media activity as part of a hiring decision. An employer, recruiter or other organisation looks at what's already public online (posts, profiles and comments) before or alongside an interview.
Who typically runs social media screening, and why?
Employers and recruiters run most social media screening, usually alongside a CV review and an interview. It happens at scale: a December 2022 survey of 1,002 US hiring decision-makers found 70% use social media to research candidates, and 51% of hiring managers said they had never found anything that stopped them hiring someone.
Is social media screening the same as a formal verification check?
Social media screening looks only at what's already public online. Formal checks for criminal or financial records are a separate process: consent-based, run through an accredited provider, and bound by their own legal rules.
